ABOUT ME

My name is Earvin Charles Cabalquinto. I am a PhD Candidate at the School of Media, Film and Journalism, Monash University, Melbourne, Australia.

Prior to embarking on  a PhD journey, I worked in a television network in the Philippines. The bulk of my experiences are as a scriptwriter, segment producer, production assistant, and a talent. 

After a few years of television work, I moved to Brunei Darussalam to work as a copywriter in an advertising agency.  I also worked as an events coordinator, writer and host. 

Currently, I am a full-time PhD Candidate at Monash University. On the side, I have delivered guest lectures in subjects like International Communication and Public Relations. Outside the university, I cover events and contribute articles in The Philippine Times, the Filipino newspaper in Melbourne, Australia.

Personally, I have been running a blog that I used in chronicling travel tips and tricks in living and working in Brunei Darussalam. My blog contains literary narratives as well which won in blogging awards. My migration in Melbourne has shifted the direction and content of my blog towards Melbourne-inspired stories. Through blogging, I was featured in January 2013 by SMILE Magazine, Cebu Pacific’s Inflight Magazine to talk about Brunei Darussalam. I was also invited to judge photo entries in the “It’s my Panay Summer Camp Online Photo Contest” in 2011. I also published as article entitled “Tips and Tricks for Filipinos Studying Overseas” as a guest blogger in Haypinas.org: Overseas Filipino Channel.

As an emerging scholar in the field of mobile media and communication studies, I’ve been actively participating in seminars and workshops inside and outside Monash University. I’ve been a member of The Asian Cultural and Media Studies Research Cluster at Monash and in the Cultural Typhoon Melbourne. Cultural Typhoon is in solidarity with the Association of Cultural Typhoon based in Japan. The Cultural Typhoon Melbourne is composed of a cohort of Melbourne-based scholars, students and activitsts who are interested in exploring media and cultural studies in Asian Contexts. I’m also an active volunteer of the Monash Postgraduate Association (MPA). I am also a member of the Filipino-Australian Students Council in Melbourne, Australia.

Back in the Philippines, I am affiliated with the University of the Philippines (UP) College of Mass Communication Graduate Association, the UP Open University Alumni Association and the UP Alumni Association. I was proactive in University organizations during my undergrad. I held positions in UP Young Entrepreneurs Soceity (UP YES) and UP Sandigan para sa Ikauunlad ng Kamalayang Maka-Araling Panlipunan (UP SIKAP).  I was also invited in speaking engagements to deliver inspirational message. Recently, I was the guest speaker of the Faculty of Information and Communication Studies (UP Open University) in their recognition rites. I delivered a speech entitled “UP Open University: Mobilising an Empowered and Networked Education System in the 21st Century”. Prior to moving in Melbourne, I was active in community-based organizations. In Brunei Darussalam, I was the Vice-Chairman of UP Circle Brunei (2010 – 2011) wherein I wrote the speech of the chairman and the Philippine Ambassador during the State Visit of President Aquino in Brunei Darussalam in 2011. I also wrote news report for UP Circle Brunei and produced videos for presentation in the organization. Meanwhile, in 2010, I produced an 8-minute documentary on Filipino homosexuals and Online Media use in Brunei Darussalam entitled “Bakod” (Fence). It was produced and presented to the graduate class of DEVC 207: Design and Production of Audio-Visual Development Communication Materials. Overall, I am passionate about mass media, communication research, community engagement, public speaking, and creative production.

In terms of research, I am interested in mobile media, transnational communication, communicative mobilities, digital cultures, camera phone photography, gender representations,  advertising, popular culture, and social development through communication.


I plan to teach after my PhD or land a job in media research. Any opportunities, especially in Melbourne, Australia, are very welcome.
